Questions & Answers

MY MACHINE IS QUIET BUT MY TABLE MAKES NOISES WHEN I RUN IT ON HIGH SPEEDS... ANY IDEAS?

Yes, try putting an old "mouse pad" under the feet of your Juki... it won't raise it much and it should cut down on the vibration noises of your table.

DO YOU HAVE A QUESTION? PLEASE LET ME KNOW!

If you do... please feel free to e-mail us and we will try to answer it to the best of our ability. We will then add that Q and A to this section.

MY WIFE WANTS A TL-98Q FOR CHRISTMAS. I WANT TO GET IT FOR HER, BUT KEEP IT A SURPRISE. I SEE YOU HAVE A $300 SHOPPING SPREE ON THREAD WITH THE MACHINE. SINCE I HAVE NO IDEA ON WHAT TO GET FOR THREAD, CAN I PURCHASE THIS NOW, AND THEN LET HER ORDER HER THREADS AFTER CHRISTMAS?

You bet! We can send you the TL-98Q anytime before Christmas. Your wife can "pick" her own threads after Christmas... and, at her leisure. We do ask that the thread order not be 'split'... we need to keep that as one bundle when ordering.

WHAT ABOUT NEEDLES?

A quality needle will NOT damage your machine. Schmetz is the best quality needle. I've used it for many years for both piecing and machine quilting and my students use them on all makes and models of machines. I use the Schmetz Quilting 90/14 for about 75% of my quilting and the Schmetz Topstitch 90/14 for metallic, decorative and heavier weight threads. This needle is also recommended by top prize winning quilt artists. Most fabric stores carry the Schmetz brand of needles. If you have trouble finding the Topstitch 90/14 contact Bob at superiorthreads.com and he will be able to ship to you.

WHY WOULD I NEED THESE GLOVES?

This is the same question I had... and then I tried them while free motion quilting. I never realized how hard I was pushing down on my quilt in order to move it smoothly under the needle. The fingertips are coated with a resin that really help you ?grip? your project as you ?free motion? quilt... which reduces stress on your shoulders, arms and hands. A product that helps minimize stress on my body is a winning product to me. Machingers are light weight and don?t make your hands hot like the ?gardening gloves? you may have tried before. They are machine washable. The finger tips do pick up colors from fabrics but will not transfer colors to other fabrics.

DO I REALLY NEED TO OIL MY TL-98Q?

Please! Yes! Make sure to oil your new Juki before you begin your first stitch. After that, oiling depends on your hours of usage. Just remember that a well oiled machine is a happy machine.

DOES THE TL-98Q COME WITH A DARNING FOOT?

Yes, the TL-98Q does come with two darning feet and a walking foot. On the darning feet one circle is a little larger than the other and quilters are using it for echo quilting. They are all metal and wonderful. The walking foot is a professional, heavy duty quality and I love it. I use mine a lot and it has held up beautifully.

HOW DO I USE THE NEEDLE THREADER?

1. Lower the pesser foot. 2. Bring needle up to its highest position. 3. Lower the needle threader. Make sure you press firmly so that the threader is in position and hold it there. 4. Guide the thread behind silver plate. Pull the thread towards you and then to the right. This pulls it into the slot in the bottom of the plate. Keep pulling the thread to the right and pass it through the slot on the bottom of the white plastic guide (This is shown on #2 page 17 of your manual) 5. Holding the thread loosely, release the lever. 6. Your thread should loop through the needle eye and you can pull it through from there.

WHAT ABOUT GETTING MY JUKI REPAIRED?

I hear this question all the time. My answer is this; In my town there are 5 shops that can and do work on many different brands of machines... I called all 5 and asked it they would be able to work on my TL-98Q if needed and 4 of the 5 said, ?sure.? That is because the TL-98Q is mechanical and basic, They are not worried about all the electrical stuff involved as with other machines.

DOES THE TL-98Q COME WITH BOBBINS? HOW MANY? DO YOU SELL EXTRAS, AND AT WHAT COST?

YES the Juki TL-98Q comes with bobbins. Five metal bobbins are included. We also offer two types of replacement bobbins. Our metal bobbins are sold individually at $1.50, and we offer plastic bobbins in a 10pk pouch for $2.50.

CAN I CHOOSE MY OWN Superior Threads PACKAGE?

Yes, you CAN choose your own threads. Perhaps we should word our website differently. We offered the 'recommended' package for people that had never used Superior Threads. Others have been overwhelmed with the number of choices and asked us to come up with a recommended assortment. But, by all means, you are free to choose any quantity and any product Superior Threads has to offer.

CAN MY TL-98Q BE USED ON A HANDI QUILTER?

Sure! Or, on a Hinterberg, or Grace... just about any free motion quilting frame.

DOES THE TL-98Q DO EMBROIDERY?

No, this particular model only does a straight stitch which is perfect for machine quilting and piecing. The HZL-E80 does 150 decorative stitches...

HOW DO I CONTROL THE SPEED?

The Juki TL-98Q is an industrial machine and is known for being able to maintain a good high speed. Good speed control is essential for quality machine quilting whether you are going very slow for detail work or at a high speed for background and continuous line designs. Most of my students have had no problem being able to maintain either speed using just the foot pedal.

WHAT IS THE LARGEST QUILT I CAN FIT ON THE TL-98Q?

The largest quilt I have done is a king. It takes work but it will fit. I usually do my large quilts 1/4 of the quilt at one time. Starting in the middle, working toward the right and down, working in the lower right quadrant. After I finish this section I spin the quilt and work in the next area which would then become the new lower right quadrant. A #2 A: I have been able to fit a king sized quilt down the middle with a bit of room left over for my hands for manipulation. I don't roll or use the clamps on the quilt. I simply put the quilt into the machine and smooth out the area that I am quilting which allows me to fit a bit more quilt into the sewing arm space.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TL-98E AND THE TL-98Q?

The basic Juki machine itself is the same between the "E" and"Q" models. All the things that make it special such as the wide arm space, thread clipper, knee lift, built in extension table and solid metal construction have remained the same. The improvements that have been made include: (1) a quieter thread clipper, (2) a telescoping thread guide that will go all the way down for not only safer transportation but also giving it the flexibility to be used with certain model quilting frames, (3) a needle threader, (4) two types of free motion darning feet (all metal), (5) professional walking foot.

CAN THE TL-98Q MODEL USE PRE-WOUND BOBBINS?

Yes, the Juki TL-98Q uses L style prewound bobbins. Superior Threads carries a great selection of prewounds.
